Week 13 Thursday Night Football

Week 13 starts off with a bang featuring the 10-1 Falcons and 5-6 Saints. This may seem like a mismatch but the Saints have won 11 of the last 13 in the rivalry. The last match-up was nothing short of what we have become to expect, a thriller down to the last heave. The Saints were able to deliver a goal line stand, with the ball on the one yard line and less than 2 minutes in the game. This game is expected to be even better this tine with both teams needing it to prove that a) the Falcons can beat the Saints and b) the Saints can make a playoff run. To me both are a little hard to see, I don’t know if the Saints are just in the Falcons heads, because Matt Ryan played lights out and they still lost. The Saints are 5-6 and would have to win out to even have a shot at a wildcard but if they do make it they will do damage.
On a bright note the Falcons are getting Sean Weatherspoon back (who wasn’t active in the first game) he will be on Jimmy Graham most of the night. On a different note Asante Samuel is injured and may not play, if he doesn’t play it would open up the passing game for Brees which then would free up Graham.
I feel like this is going to be another shoot out type of game where both qbs throw for 300+ yards and 2-3 tds. The key to game will be which qb will turn the ball over first. I predict Atlanta wins 27-24 and player of the game will be Matt Ryan who will throw for 362 yards 3 tds and a pick. Follow me on twitter T@19Shaffer

Week 12 in review

This week has had some moments of  ecstasy (Cam Newtons 4 td performance on MNF) and moments of atrocious play (Mark Sanchez fumbles after running into his own linemens butt).
The Pats vs Jets had both moments in it. Brady was great and the entire Jets team was just sad. Brady just picked the sorry jets defense apart and got help with their 5 turnovers. The Jets stood no chance after allowing 35 points in the second quarter and lost 49-19.
The Steelers decided not to play against the Browns and gave the ball up 8 times!?!?!?!?!? Yes 8 times. The Browns rookie Weeden made enough plays to pull the game out in an impressive win for him.
The Arizona Cardinals started this  off at 4-0 and have free falled to 4-7 after losing to the (3-6-1) St. Louis Rams by 14 points. The Rams rookie, Janoris Jenkins, had a nice welcome to the NFL present in two pick 6s.
There were actually some pretty close games that came down to the last seconds and even overtime. The Atlanta Falcons improved to 10-1 after narrowly defeating the Tampa Bay Bucs 24-23 by shutting down rookie sensation Doug Martin only allowing 50+ rush yards. The Bucs just could not stop Ryan from throwing the football at all and reinserted himself in the MVP discussion.
The late game Sunday was supposed to be a revenge game for the Green Bay Packers. The Packers were 15-1 going into the playoffs and got knocked out in their first game by Eli and the NY Giants. The Giants scored a td quick then Rodgers hit Nelson for a 60 yard bomb. At that point I was thinking my chances of winning this week in fantasy are over and this is going to be a shootout. Noone told Rodgers this because the Giants went on a 31-3 run and won by 28. Proving that the Giants are again a threat to win the Super Bowl.
Last nights MNF game between the Pantbers and Eagles was horrible to watch if you like defense. The horrendous defense of the Eagles allowed Cam to throw for 300 yards and 2 tds and rush for 50+ and 2 tds. This was a game for Cam to help prove he wasn’t a one hit wonder.
The top performers of my eye test for week 12 were: RGIII, Andre Johnson, AP, Tom Brady and Collin Kaepernick. Follow me on twitter T19Shaffer

Monday Night Football pick

Tonight’s MNF game is against the (2-8) Carolina Panthers and (3-7) Philadelphia Eagles. This isn’t the worst win percentage to play on MNF, but its close. The Panthers and Eagles are both under performing this year and both coaches will probally not be back next year. With Vicky and McCoy out with concussions. I think Foles can replace Vick in the long run, but not having McCoy will hurt them significantly. Their defense has fallen apart this year and since firing Juan Castillo (supposedly the problem on defense) they are the worst defense in many statistical categories. With that bad defense here comes Cam “Superman” Newton looking to show people that his rookie year was not a fluke, that he is the real deal. He needs to prove he is on the verge of elite. Tonight I have Panthers 28-10. Over the Eagles. Follow me on twitter T19Shaffer

Bad sign in San Fran???

The 49ers have some big issues. I know this sounds crazy after winning by double digits against the Saints and are 8-2-1. I know your like that sounds like a great season so far, but here comes why. The way they handled the Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick qb controversy is going to start a bad trend in the NFL. If I played in the league now I would never ever tell anyone I was injured because even though you have taken your team to the NFC Champ game you will lose your job. I understand why Jim Harbaugh switched qbs but it just sends the wrong message.  True Kaepernick gives them a better chance to win and is more dynamic than the non mobile Alex Smith it just looks bad. Key message to this story is now you have to be careful about admitting to injuries you never know if you will have a job afterward. Follow me on twitter T19Shaffer

Is Norv done???

With the San Diego Chargers loss to the Ravens they fall to 3-7 and their season is all but over. They were up 13-3 in the fourth quarter and should of easily won this game, but typical of this team under Norv they blew the lead to force overtime. Not only did they allow the Ravens to come back on them they allowed them to convert a 4th and 29 unbelievable. They have done nothing but disappoint fans year after year. This has to be the last straw, they have to fire Norv and GM AJ Smith.  I’ve seen enough of this team failing with above average talent.
Phillip Rivers may have been around this too long to be fixed because he seems to have regressed. This organization is a disaster and needs to be over hauled. Follow me on T19Shaffer

AFC WESTBOUND and Bound

Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos are exactly what I thought they would be this year atop the AFC West. With arguably the best free agent pick up in Peyton Manning why wouldn’t you think they would be winning. Yes it’s a new team, new organization and new city but, it’s the same Peyton. They currently have a top 6 passing game led by, Demaryius Thomas with 900+ receiving yards. They have improved their defense significantly from in the 20s to now a top 10 defense headed by Von Miller, third in the league in sacks. Since they have the easiest remaining schedule they should finish either 12-4 or 13-3 with a first round bye in the playoffs. They will receive around the 28th pick and will draft Dallas Thomas Offensive Tackle Tennessee.

San Diego Chargers
The Chargers have been a absolute disappointment this year. They were picked by many to win this division, because of all the talent they have on offense and defense. With a top 10-15 quarterback in Phillip Rivers they should be well above 2 games under .500 at 4-6. They added Robert Meachem, a product of Drew Brees in my opinion, to fill in the hole left by Vincent Jackson.  They have had some injuries on offense, but without a true number 1 receiver noone gets open very often. With a 6th ranked total defense they have been getting stops, but with their 24th ranked total offense they just haven’t been moving the ball. They will finish 7-9, Norv Turner should get fired, and have a mid teen draft pick with that their draft pick should be Jonathan Cooper Guard from North Carolina
Oakland Raiders are in a sad state in football on the brink of a 11th straight non winning season. The Raiders are actually decent on offense this year, but their defense is horrible. They have talent on both sides of the ball, but talent doesn’t always equate to success. They have a quarterback in Carson Palmer that should hold up for another year or two, so getting him weapons is a priority if the Raiders want go win. They will finish this 5-11 and get a top 10 pick and with a top 10 pick they should draft Luke Joeckel Tackle at of Texas A&M.
Finally the Kansas City Chiefs they are in the cellar of the AFC West. They have no long term answer in quarterback or along that o-line. Their defense is solid and good enough to make the play offs if they had a offense. They will finish 2-14 and have the number one or two pick in the draft. With that high of pick they should trade it to lower 20th pick and a lot of draft picks. With a draft pick in the 20s they should draft Justin Hunter Wide Receiver from Tennessee.
