Hello, ladies and gentleman, it has been a little while since I last posted a blog. This is going to be a little bit different type of post then most people have been used to with me. I am going to give a review of the sports books I have been reading.

First Book: Finally Free from Michael Vick

I was looking forward to reading this autobiography about controversial NFL star Michael Vick. It was written well enough to keep me reading, but it was written entirely too biased. It seemed to me that he was constantly writing excuses into why he made the chooses he made in life. I had to quit reading it about halfway through book because it was just too much excuse making for ne personally so I would have to give this book a 2 star rating with a 5 star the best.

The Second Book: The War Room: The legacy of Bill Belichick and the Art of building the perfect team.

I have recently started reading this book yesterday and have been pleasantly surprised on how well written it is. The way it depicts how Belichick has had to overcome failures to eventually achieve greatness. I’m only 20% through the book and so far I have a whole new respect for him. He gives people a chance when other people wouldn’t. He’s thought process on running a team is unique and is thought to be crazy. I will update further when I finish the book.

In with the New, out with the Old

                 The 2013 NFC/AFC Championship games are almost here and are huge for many reasons. With the pending Ray Lewis retirement, Tony Gonzalez is thinking about retirement after this season, the evolution of the spread offense of the 49ers and potentially Tom Bradys’ 6th Super Bowl appearance and tying Bill Belichick with Don Shula for Super Bowl appearances with 6. So yeah there’s a lot at stake in this years Conference Championship games.

The NFC Championship Game

  VS.    

 

The San Francisco 49ers are at Atlanta Falcons at 3:00 p.m. Sunday January 20, 2013.

This is a match-up between two polar opposite offenses. Atlanta running more of a pro style type of offense, while the 49ers run a pistol offense/read option offense. Matt Ryan has had a very successful year breaking Passing Yards record with 4719 and Passing Touchdown record with 32. This Falcons team was the hottest team all year in the NFC, while the 49ers made a quarterback change during the season which took a little time to blossom. Since the 49ers changed from Alex Smith, who is a prototypical game manager, to Colin Kaepernick who is a dual threat Quarterback that is allowed to run the offense that best suits him, the pistol offense. Lets breakdown the match-up –

QB’s- Matt Ryan vs Colin Kaepernick- I say its a tie based on what both can and have done so far this season.

HB’s- Turner/Rodgers vs Gore- Atlanta’s tandem is a power back to a change of pace back, while Gore is a speed that can lower his shoulder. Edge to Gore

Tight End- Tony G vs Vernon Davis- Both are physical freaks, but Davis gets shut out of some games and Tony G is always a factor in the outcome of the Game. Edge to Tony G.

WR’s- Roddy/Jones vs Crabtree/Moss- Roddy/Jones is easily the best receiver tandem in all of the NFL, Crabtree is having a break out year, but Moss is just too old at this point in his career. Edge to Roddy/Jones.

Defenses- 49ers vs Falcons- The 49ers defense is a very physical dominating defense that gets to the quarterback quite easily. The Falcons don’t have a great pass rush with Abraham injured. Without being able to contain Kaepernick the Falcons will have a long day. The edge goes to San Fran.

This should be a very good game and the final score will show it, I believe this game should come down to who wins the match-up between Tony G vs Willis and Davis vs Weatherspoon. I have the 49ers winning 27-24.

The AFC Championship

VS.

Baltimore Ravens vs New England Patriots at 6:30 p.m. January 20th, 2013.

These two teams have been very competitive the last 3 games all finishing in 3 points or less in each game. The Ravens defense is a older defense, but is playing very inspired because of Ray Lewis retiring at the end of the year. The Patriots have had another ridiculous offensive season this year. The Ravens always seem to have the Patriots number and are able to get to and disrupt Tom Brady, so this could be another great game. I am going to break this match up down and let you know who I think will win.

QBs- Tom Brady vs Joe Flacco- This is a match-up between the great Tom Brady against a very inconsistent Joe Flacco. Edge to Brady

HBs- Ray Rice vs Vereen/Ridley/Woodhead- This seems like a lock for Ray Rice but the trio of running backs for the Patriots are very effective in what they do in running and catching the ball. Slight edge to Vereen/Ridley/Woodhead

WR- Smith/Boldin vs Welker/Lloyd- As good as Welker is Lloyd just isn’t consistent enough. Smith and Boldin have been very impressive this postseason, torching the Broncos secondary. Smith/Boldin gets the edge.

TEs- Pitta vs Hernandez- Pitta has had some very good games this year, which has been somewhat of a break out season for him. Hernandez has been injured a lot of the year, but he has been effective in the games he has played. Edge to Hernandez

Defense- Ravens vs Patriots- The Ravens are playing some very inspired defense, but they did give up a ton of yards and points to the Broncos last week. The Patriots played a less superior offense in the Houston Texans and had them held down until the game was over. I say the Patriots defense plays very well this week and will outplay the aging defense of the Ravens. Edge to Patriots.

Though these match-ups are close besides the quarterback position. This should be a very good game, while my heart says it will be a complete annihilation of 41-14. I am going to go with my head and say Patriots win 31-17.

Fool’s Gold Dome

Let me start off by telling you that this is not me being a prisoner of the moment, but to all the Notre Dame fans you guys are just an AVERAGE program not ELITE. The Irish are on tv every week so they get a lot of love from the media, but every year they disappoint fans and themselves. This baffles me because they haven’t won a National Championship since 1988. Really? 1988, they still get top recruits and top recruit classes. Why? I could understand if they were a legitimate threat to win a BCS bowl every year but they aren’t. Since 1998, that’s win the BCS (Bowl Championship Series) was created, Notre Dame is 0-4 in BCS Bowls allowing an average of 39.5 points per game and only scoring an average of 14.25 points per game.Wow, that is not something you would expect from a great football school. Since the great Lou Holtz left the Irish in 1996, the Irish are 119-78 that’s ELITE no that’s a 65% win percentage. The history; all ND fans speak of is from 1918 to 1988 yes I realize that’s a huge time span. The Irish were the cream of the crop in that time span, but since then they have been every bit of average. If you want to say they produce talent then we can go there. Justin Tuck, Kyle Rudolph and Golden Tate are the only players in the last 7 years to have a big role for a NFL team. Joe Montana is one of the Most Successful player from Notre Dame, but he played in 1978! To bridge the gap of my thoughts, ND isn’t a huge NFL factory of talent like some other schools such as, Alabama, USC, Florida  and Miami. They may have won the second most National Championships, but they haven’t won one since 1988 that’s 24 long sad years. The next time you hear or want to say Notre Dame is an Elite Football College please remind them or yourself that they haven’t been ELITE in 20+ years. When you live in the past you eventually stay there and that’s what has happened to Notre Dame, they just can’t get out of the past.

Receivers flying high in 2012

     The 2012 season was a season to remember with so many records being broke. The season started off a little slow for the receivers, with no one receiver coming forward as the best. That all changed after the first few weeks of the season. This season their were many 1,000 yard receivers, but only a few stood out to me. I will give you my top 5 receivers of the 2012 season.

5) Reggie Wayne-

The 2012 Colts is easily the most heartfelt and remarkable season i can think of. With their head coach out most of the season, due to Leukemia, and a relatively young team. This could of been another lost season, if not for the leadership for Reggie Wayne. Reggie has been a hall of fame caliber player in his time with Peyton, but he was determined to prove all his critics wrong. He had a down year for his standards having only 960 yards receiving, while most people would give him a break on the lack of a QB i did not. I will admit i was hard on him last year, but only because of how much i respect him. He is on track to have a bust in Canton, but he will need two more good 1000+ yard seasons to reach 15k yards. He ended his 12th season with 1,355 yards and 5 touchdown catches.Wayne has developed a strong connection with Rookie QB Andrew Luck. I have a strong feeling that next year could be a breakout year, well as much a 12 year veteran can break out, and lead him into a number 2 all-time ranking. 2013 Predictions 95 catches, 1,200 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns.

 

4) Wes Welker-

Anyone that said that Wes is getting phased out of New England, because of his rocky season opener where he only had 5 targets, was dead wrong. Week 2 was back to the same ole, same ole being the best slot receiver in the game. Wes has become Tom Bradys’ security blanket since his arrival in 2007. If not for either a bad pass or a missed catch, depends on who you ask, they would be arguably the best Super Bowl duo. Wes easily catches 110 balls a year which is more impressive to me than a guy who is a just a deep threat/ big threat receiver. He holds the record for most 110 reception seasons with five. In his ninth year of his career, he accumulated 1,354  yards and six touchdowns, which is about his average since his Patriot career began. I believe the contract dispute will work its self out this off season. He deserves the money he gets, he just might not get it from the Patriots. My gut feeling is he gets a smaller contract from the Pats and he will take it. If he’s a Pat next year he will get 100 receptions for 1,298 receiving yards, if he is not a Pat he will get somewhere in the neighborhood of 90 catches for about 900 yards.

3) Brandon Marshall-

Brandon has been the best offensive weapon the Bears have had in years. He is a huge talent standing a remarkable 6’4″ tall and is easily the most important player on the Chicago Bears. As the only offensive option, he still managed to snag 118 balls while facing double coverage most of the season. His 1,508 receiving yards are 3rd best in the NFL and the 11 touchdowns are tied for fourth in the league. As a Bears fan, when we traded for Marshall I was so excited that we finally had a legit number 1 receiver, he could easily shatter all the receiving records that the Bears have. With his first year in Chicago over, Marshall looks to top his own Chicago Bear single season record of receptions and receiving yards next year. I believe he will have an even better year next year. I think he will manage to get 120 receptions for 1,900 receiving yards.

 

2)  Andre Johnson-

Andre had been injured most of the past two years with a nagging hamstring injury. I will be the first one to say, I lost faith that he could produce at the same level anymore. He had the potential to be an all-time great, but with four injury filled seasons in his career, his legacy will fall short of where it could and should of been. Andre was easily the most physically dominant receiver in the league for his first 5-6 years in the league. He is a prime example of a player that suffers injuries and it prohibits him from achieving the greatness he should’ve. As a Miami fan, Johnson has been one of the best offensive players to come from Miami in a long time. My heart says next year he will have another breakout year of around 1,300 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns or he could play 6 games and only get 500 receiving yards. At this point it’s really a crap shoot, I just hope that he has another breakout year.

1) Calvin “Megatron” Johnson-

“A man that is years ahead of the rest of his peers”,” a physical freak of nature.” Those  are just a few things said about the man, the legend, Megatron. He shattered the single season record of receiving yards, Jerry Rice was the previous record holder with 1,848 in 1995, with 1,964. Calvin Johnson often makes defenses look like he’s playing Madden, by making his defenders miss or just going through them. He has gradually improved his receptions and receiving yards over the last four years. Though his receiving yards were so great this year they could of been so much better. He was double or triple covered all year, given i never saw Jerry Rice play in his prime, it makes it the most impressive record breaking performance I’ve ever witnessed. I say he will at least repeat his performance next year, I have him eclipsing 2000 receiving yards, but only have 8 touchdowns.

My top 5 Running Backs of 2012

This is going to be much like my previous post about Quarterbacks and Tight Ends. I will give you some people you may be surprised to see on this list. Again, this is all my opinion and if I leave off your guy I’m sorry he should of played better.

5) C.J. Spiller-

C.J. spent most of the year sharing carries with fellow running back Fred Jackson. Jackson missed a total of six games this year due to injury and in those absences Spiller took over as the lead back. With his limited workload this year he accumulated over 1700 yards from scrimmage, 8 total touchdowns and unfortunately lost 3 fumbles. He has electric speed, elusiveness and good hands. He is the perfect mixture of dual threat talent. The one question i have is can he his build last as a every down back, Though 2012 wasn’t a good year for the Bills, Spiller seemed to be the best and at times only offensive weapon. He managed to gain over 1200 yards on the ground with a measly 207 rush attempts. I will be watching closely next year to see if he can repeat this success.

4) Alfred Morris-

Alfred Morris was a sixth round pick acquired from the Minnesota Vikings in the Donovan McNabb trade, talk about a steal of a trade. He has managed to be one of the best Quarterback/Running Back duos in the NFL, with his franchise record breaking 1613 rushing yards. He managed to compile a very respectable rookie campaign, with 1690 yards from scrimmage and 13 touchdowns. He unfortunately had a little bit of a fumbling problem with 4 fumbles and 3 fumbles lost. He was the definition of a workhorse, as a rookie he had a ridiculous 335 carries. Morris burst on the scene against the Saints, rushing for nearly 100 yards and 2 touchdowns. He’s a power back with some speed and will hit you square in the mouth. He is Terrell Davis to John Elway (RG3), with Mike Shanahan leading this team they are very similar to each other. I am not 100% sold on Morris long term because of his workload as a rookie, but for this season he was a top 5 back.

3) Marshawn Lynch-

With nick names such as, Beast mode, you have to be an unstoppable force on the football field and in my mind the hardest player to take down in the NFL. He has been the main offensive weapon for the Seahawks since his arrival in early 2010. Lynch is as old school as you can be in today’s game, with his hard hitting smash mouth running style. He consistently gets his team into good field position, which sets up the rookie Russell Wilson to use the play action effectively. Lynch has had a career year gaining 1786 yards from scrimmage. He reached pay dirt 12 times while having another career year in fumbles with 4, but only losing 2 of them. Lynch may be one of the best in the game, but he is a tad bit old for a running back. He should be able to continue this workload for at least 2 more years.

2) Doug Martin-

The Muscle Hamster as people like to call him, just don’t say it in front of him. He has had the most impressive rookie season that i can remember for a running back.. He nearly eclipsed 2000 all scrimmage yards with 1926 yards and had 12 total touchdowns. He has great hands only fumbling one time all year, which was recovered by the defense. As  a rookie, Martin was the heart and sole of the Tampa Bay Bucs offense. His rookie season started off slow, with his carries restricted, stat wise. His ability to block and catch the ball got him more opportunities, which showcased his skills against the Raiders. He had franchise record for rushing yards (251) and rushing tds in a half (4). He is potentially the best dual threat running back in the league today. As a rookie he had the second best statistical season this year right behind number 1 on my list.

1) Adrian Peterson-

He just had the best season for a running back that I’ve ever witnessed. He was 9 yards shy of breaking the all time single season rushing record of 2105. AP is the most dominate and best running back and the records show it he holds or is sharing 22 rushing records. 12 Vikings records, 9 NFL records and 1 Pro Bowl record. AP has accounted for 2314 yards from scrimmage which ranks 8th all time. He is 1 year since he went down with a torn acl and mcl. He came back early to start week 1 of the season and just took off since then. I have him as this years MVP over Peyton because of the way he took over this year and that he is legitly the Vikings only weapon on offense. I feel that he will continue to be the best running back in the league for at least 3-4 more years.

This is my 2013 NFL Mock Draft in my opinion and will reflect who I believe they should draft, but unfortunately i can not predict trades. I will keep it as accurate as i can.

The Top 5 QBs and Tight Ends this year

This is the top 5 lists in my opinion not necessarily the best stats. This involves all things that goes into being the best at their position.

Top 5 quarterbacks

1) Tom Brady- Most people tend to not give him his credit because he does it year in and year out. In my life he is the best quarterback I have ever seen. He was top 10 in all major categories. He has accounted for 38 tds and 10 turnovers this year. He guided his team to a 12-4 record this yea and AFC East title.

2)Aaron Rodgers- He is widely
Regarded as a top 2 quarterback with Tom Brady. His team started out slow but managed to regain focus and win the NFC North and the number 3 seed in the NFC. He had the highest Passer Rating while achieving the number QBR Rating.
He guided his team to a 11-5 record and a NFC North division title.

3) Peyton Manning- He has led his team from 8-8 and winning the division to 13-3 and a number 1 overall seed in the AFC. He his in the MVP race and come back player of the Year race. He leads the number 4 overall offense.

4) Drew Brees- He is my Offensive Player of the Year and if not for the turnovers he should be in the MVP race. He is the only quarterback to throw for 5000+ yards this season and only quarterback to throw 40+ td passes. Besides a couple unusual games he would be in the single digits or low teens in interceptions. He led his team to a number two overall offense but his teams defense just awful. Their 7-9 record would of been much worse without Brees. This team will not be in the playoffs this year but should be back next year.

5) RGIII- This Rookie has helped resurrect this franchise. He has been unreal how efficient he has been this year with the third best Passer Rating as a rookie! He has over 4000 total yards, 27 tds and 10 turnovers. He should win the Offensive Rookie of the Year. He has his team in the playoffs and may go deep into the playoffs.

Those are my top 5 QBs and here go my top 5 Tight Ends.

1) Jason Witten- He set the record for receptions in a single season for a tight end with 110. He is a dual threat and by that he is a good blocker and receiver. The only downfall to him is he only has 3 td receptions this year. He has some very good hands but to start the year he dropped a few balls.

2) Tony Gonzalez- The greatest tight end to ever play the game is still going strong at age 36. He had 93 catches for over 900 yards. Like Witten he is a blocker also which takes a little bit off his stats. He will look to win his first playoff game this year.

3) Jimmy Graham- He would be number 2 but he has had entirely too many drops. Some of his drops are due to him playing injured. He is more of a receiving tight end than the first two players. He is Drew Brees number 1 target and is a young talented player.

4) Heath Miller-Even though his season ended early he already had a career year in targets, receiving yards and receiving tds. His first priority is to block then he is a receiving target. I’m more impressed by him than anyone else because of his blocking ability. His season ended with a tore ACL and MCL. He will look to come back early next year.

5) Rob Gronkowski- He also had a sever injury this year with a broken forearm. He missed 5 games and yet he still had almost 800 yards and 11 td catches. If he would of played all year he would of easily been the best tight end. I look forward to seeing him in the playoffs and continue his dominance.

Those are the top 5 for Tight Ends and QBs.

2012 Regular Season Awards In My Opinion

I am going to give out my regular season awards to the most deserving recipient. I will start from the lower awards and finish with the MVP. The individual awards I will give my runner up in each award.

Executive of the Year- Thomas Dimitroff General Manager of Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons were the best and most dominate team in the NFC and was one of the more surprising teams in the NFL. 13-3 overall record

Coach of the Year- Pete Carroll from the Seattle Seahawks. This team was a surprise to many and may have been the most surprising team in the NFL.
11-5 overall record

Defensive Rookie of the Year- Luke Kuechly Linebacker from Carolina Panthers. He leads all rookies in Tackles with 164 total tackles, 10 pass deflects, 3 fumble recoveries, 2 INTs and 1 sack.

DRotY runner up- Bobby Wagner Linebacker from Seattle Seahawks. He was second in all rookies with 140 total tackles, 4 pass deflections, 3 INTs, and 2 sacks. He is the Heart of one of the best defenses in the league as a rookie.

Offensive Rookie of the Year- Robert Griffin the Third leads all rookies quarterbacks in Completion Percentage, Yards per attempt, Passer Rating, Rush yards and Rush tds. He was the single most effective rookie qb in the league.

ORotY runner up- Doug Martin had the third best season for a rookie running back in the history of the NFL. He had 1900+ yards from scrimmage and 12s tds.

Defensive Player of the Year- JJ Watt leads the league in sacks with 20.5, leads all non defensive backs with 16 pass deflections and has 4 forced fumbles. He has had probably more impact on a ball game than anyone on the defensive side of the ball.

DPoY runner up- Richard Sherman is the best player on the best defense in the NFL. He is leading the league in pass deflections with 24, has 8 INTs with 1 pick six and 3 forced fumbles with 1 recovery. He has been the best Cornerback in the league this year.

Offensive Player of the Year- Drew Brees had another fantastic statistical season leading the league in td passes and passing yards. He is top 10 in Completion Percentage and QB Rating.

OPoY runner up- Tom Brady he is top 10 in all major qb statistics. He is also on the number two team in the AFC.

Comeback player of the Year-Adrian Peterson is easily the most impressive player of the Year. He was 9 yards away from breaking the single season rushing record held by Eric Dickerson. 1 year ago he tore his ACL and MCL. He managed to come back a lot earlier than many people thought he would. He leads all running backs in rushing yard, ypa, rushes of 20+ yards, rushing yards per game and first downs.

Comeback Player of the Year runner up- Peyton Manning had 4 neck surgeries in a year. He has managed to come back from that and join the Denver Broncos. He picked up from where he left off with the Colts. He is just the same guy with a new team. He is also in the top 10 in all major quarterback statistical categories.

MVP- It has the same two entries as Comeback player of the Year with the same result. I have Adrian Peterson winning the MVP with Peyton Manning finishing a close second.

Those are my regular season awards the way I think they should go.
